The FRQ deploy their Action Plan for Environmental Responsibility in Research

Québec, January 26, 2021 – The Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) are proud to announce the deployment of their Action Plan for Environmental Responsibility in Research which aims to make the scientific community aware of the environmental impacts generated by research and invites them to take measures to minimize them. Contributing to the protection of the environment is a responsibility that transcends all areas of society, including the scientific research sector. Taking into account the environmental consequences of research is rightly one of the practices supported by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) as part of their Policy for the Responsible Conduct of Research.

This FRQ initiative is the first step to support the scientific community in protecting the environment; it will also make it possible to document the mitigation effort deployed by its members. Since all areas of research are likely to generate environmental impacts, the Action Plan applies to all grant applications submitted to the FRQ, regardless of their field.

It is important to note that environmental information declared to the FRQ is not used in the scientific evaluation of funding applications. Several tools support the deployment of the Action Plan including FAQs and webinars. You can now register for the webinars by clicking here.

Quotes
“The health crisis that society is currently facing must not cause us to lose sight of the importance of continuing efforts to protect the environment, which plays a major role in the population's health. The Action Plan for Environmental Responsibility in Research is one more building block laid by the FRQ in the global effort to leave a healthy environment for future generations.”
- Rémi Quirion - Chief Scientist of Québec

“Through the Action Plan for Environmental Responsibility in Research, there is now a formal process allowing researchers to report on their concrete and positive application of the principles supporting a responsible approach to the environment. While the government must set an example in all its fields of activity, the fact remains that environmental protection is a responsibility shared by all sectors of society. Therefore, good luck to the Fonds de recherche du Québec with this plan! Thanks to it, the research community will think about the Québec of tomorrow in an even more sustainable way.”
- Benoit Charette - Minister, Ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques
