New edition of the Key Figures on Research

Montréal, January 17, 2022 – In their constant concern to highlight Québec's research, the Fonds de recherche du Québec have once again called upon the Observatoire des sciences et des technologies to produce an update of the Key Figures on Research, a set of indicators on research in Québec (investments, research capacity, scientific production – available in French) that allows to trace, over time and in several respects, the evolution of Québec's research context and to compare it to that of the other Canadian provinces as well as OECD countries.

Highlights

  • Québec's scientific output has grown considerably and relatively steadily between 2000 and 2019, increasing from approximately 8,000 to over 18,000 publications for all three major research fields.
  • In 2019, 60% of Québec scientific publications were produced in international collaboration, with at least one author from another country.
  • The share of research grants from the three federal granting councils obtained by Québec researchers fluctuates slightly from 1999 to 2019, ranging from 26% to 28% of the Canadian total, while they represent 23% of Canadian faculty. They are therefore over-represented among federal grant recipients.
  • Furthermore, Québec's share of Canada Research Chair awards has increased from 23% in 2000 to 29% in 2019

Covering the three major research fields, this collection of indicators provides a generalized picture of Québec's research efforts, university research funding, publications, and patents. It is a high-quality information resource, rich in data and observations on Québec's R&D.
