As part of the 2019-2020 call for proposals to create a research network on flood-risk management in a changing climate, Chief Scientist Rémi Quirion is announcing the launch of the Réseau Inondations intersectoriel du Québec (RIISQ) intersectoral flood research network led by Philippe Gachon, research professor in the Department of Geography at Université du Québec à Montréal and director of the Centre pour l'étude et la simulation du climat à l'échelle régionale.
The RIISQ will federate 16 university institutions and over 30 partners (research centres, municipalities, associations and government departments). To fulfill its mandate to lead research, monitoring, training, public consultation and legislative and policy recommendation activities, the network will include 120 researchers in five intersectoral thematic areas: (1) flood risk; (2) land-use management, governance and legislation; (3) biopsychosocial impacts and cost sharing; (4) vulnerability reduction and (5) risk management and communication. Members' research projects will be conducted in collaboration with government, civil society and private sector organizations in Québec, Canada and abroad.
The Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) have pledged $500 000/year in funding over a three-year period, for a total amount of $1.5M.
